Intel has unveiled a new neuromorphic computing system called Hala Point, which uses its Loihi 2 research chip modeled after the human brain. The system pursues a “sparse computing” approach where computation happens at the points of data rather than moving data to compute. It packs 1.15 billion artificial neurons and 128 billion synapses. In testing, Loihi 2 showed efficiency advantages over Nvidia’s Jetson chip on some AI tasks. While still a research project, Hala Point points to future computing architectures that could enable novel AI applications by overcoming power and latency limitations.
