Open AI Operator

OpenAI launched of “Operator”

This and similar AI agents like Anthropic’s Computer Use represents an acceleration of automated system control without adequate safety mechanisms. While they claim to simplify tasks like making reservations, buying tickets and ordering groceries, they introduce significant risks around security, data privacy and financial control that aren’t being properly addressed.

The current $200/month Pro subscription model for Operator masks the broader implications of deploying AI agents with direct control over user interfaces and transactions. Though capabilities remain basic, the rush to market suggests a pattern where development of features outpaces the assessment of risk and implementation of safeguards. Critical questions about liability, oversight, and failure modes remain unanswered.

We’ve discussed this many times before. The risk of automated fraud at scale, cascade failures, and compromise of personal credentials demands a lot more careful consideration IMHO.

I think these tools may eventually deliver highly valuable automation. I’d use them.

However, current implementations lack essential protections.
