we as a species are making a giant bet that scaling up language models will unlock true artificial intelligence. If the scaling hypothesis believers are right, it’s coming soon. If they’re wrong, this could all be viewed as the biggest waste of resources in human history.
If we oversimplify things and assume that LLM’s will either achieve AGI or nothing worthwhile at all. What impact would either of these outcomes cause in your opinion?
I think the comments from the source video brings up a great point… perhaps these folks should spend all available effort in having their LLM make itself more efficient.
Since the end of 2022, there was a hypothesis that these LLMs could conceivably have huge jumps in capability but we havent’ really seen that in the last 18 months. Sure there have been advances but nothing truly ground breaking.
If the value proposition is that you pay $20 a month and on the other side of this equation some company is spending billions to run a data center… and you’re getting the equivalent of a freelancer output. Is this going to be the biggest ponzi scam since crypto?
